Ron Paul wins majority of delegates in Minnesota

Rep. Ron Paul won a majority of delegates in Minnesota’s state convention on Saturday where his supporters captured 12 of the 13 delegate slots.

The strong state convention turnout means that the Republican presidential candidate will receive 32 of the 40 Minnesota delegates for the Republican National Convention in Tampa in August, according to the Twin Cities Pioneer Press. Continue reading

Facebook shares see modest debut

Facebook shares ended their first day of trading at $38.23, barely above the company’s initial pricing of $38.

Shares in the social network rose more than 10% to $42 within minutes of trade beginning, before quickly falling back.

Later gains were wiped out too at the end of a volatile day’s trade, as the firm’s debut on the Nasdaq exchange was also delayed by a technical glitch. Continue reading

Top Romney surrogate answers Bain attacks with Solyndra

Rep. Paul Ryan, the House budget committee chairman who has emerged as a top Mitt Romney surrogate and is talked about as a possible running mate, countered the Obama campaign’s fresh attack on Romney’s record at Bain Capital by citing the government’s failed gamble on solar panel firm Solyndra.

Ryan, R-Wis., speaking on “Fox News Sunday,” tried to draw fire away from the presumptive Republican presidential nominee by pointing to the “crony capitalism” of taxpayer-backed loans to well-connected firms like Solyndra.  Continue reading

G8 Summit: Cameron says ‘good progress’ on eurozone

UK PM David Cameron has said the G8 summit of world leaders is making “good progress” on talks over the eurozone.

But he cautioned against any deal at the gathering in the United States, warning the G8 “cannot instruct the eurozone what to do”.

Mr Cameron said he supported German chancellor Angela Merkel’s insistence on efforts to reduce deficits.

A summit communique was later issued saying the leaders want debt-stricken Greece to remain in the eurozone. Continue reading

US baby boomers urged to take hepatitis C blood test

US baby boomers have been advised by health officials for the first time to get tested for the liver-destroying virus hepatitis C.

Those born between 1945-1965 are most likely to be infected but it is thought only a quarter of this generation has been tested for the virus.

200-year-old shipwreck found in Gulf of Mexico

An oil company exploration crew’s chance discovery of a 200-year-old shipwreck in a little-charted stretch of the Gulf of Mexico is yielding a trove of new information to scientists who say it’s one of the most well-preserved old wrecks ever found in the Gulf.

“When we saw it we were all just astonished because it was beautifully preserved, and by that I mean for a 200-year-old shipwreck,” said Jack Irion, maritime archaeologist with the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management in New Orleans. Continue reading
